<p> DIED. Rufino Tamayo, 91, prolific Mexican painter and
muralist; in Mexico City. Inspired by the work of Jackson Pollock
and Pablo Picasso, Tamayo employed earthy colors and surrealistic
images that blended his Zapotec Indian origins and Mexican folk
art. His subjects ranged from animals and fruit in still lifes
to play and dance in elaborate outdoor scenes. Along with Diego
Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, Tamayo
brought international attention to 20th century Mexican art.
